January event highlights

Our theme for January is COMMUNITY, and we brought it to life with performers, activities and interests that reflect the best of Oakland. Here’s what’s in store…

The Rob Skate Academy has been providing mindfulness mentorship through the power of skateboarding, and showing people how to do it safely and properly. Their action-packed, fun-filled programs are tailored to different age groups and has been taught around the world in schools, parks and now at Oakland First Fridays.

Rob Ferguson started the Rob Skate Academy ten years ago provide safe spaces for young people to build confidence and promote mindfulness through skateboarding. He and his professionally-trained team will provide hands-on guidance in a safe environment experience the thrill that’s made skateboarding an Olympic sport. It’s free, open to all ages and skill levels, and equipment will be provided.

Curb Service is a creative music group which first appeared on street corners of Oakland. They've since become a name known further than they had ever expected. This group  is most famous for their natural ability to attend any event and have their sound and experience translate with all attendees from children to top-notch music enthusiasts. Providing the healthy energy which is greatly needed within the world has been their main goal since the group has formed.

The core of the group is Rob Woods as lead vocalist, and Oakland’s own Drummerboy Aaron (who magnifies his talent every show).  Well-known saxophone player Kalin Freeman sets the tone with his smooth melodic tunes mixed in with beautiful elevated pitches.  David Chatman has been hands-on with the group for over a year now, helping create, curate and mold the team, as well as display his phenomenal talents from behind the lens.

When not traveling they are often found playing for their communities, volunteering their energy to give back to home and create peace using their natural talents. Curb Service popped up at December’s event and were a big hit, so we’re delighted to have them back. They'll be playing from 5:00-8:30pm on 25th Street.

The Chinyakare Ensemble is a family of musicians, dancers and teachers committed to preserving and sharing traditional Zimbabwean culture, and promoting community building and education through music and dance. Chinyakare presents an electrifying performance of the traditional dance, music, and culture of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, providing audiences with a glimpse of the beauty, excitement, and spirit of traditional African culture. They'll be playing from 7:00-8:30pm on Sycamore Street.

Oakland First Fridays is a nonprofit event and it couldn’t happen without the help of volunteers at all levels. This month we are especially honored to have representatives from the Women’s March Oakland greeting attendees at our main entrance at Telegraph and Grand. Women’s March Oakland’s mission is to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities in Oakland and the greater East Bay to create transformative social change. They’ll also have a table at G39 (Telegraph and 23rd, near the Tiki Lounge) to answer any questions about their organization or the upcoming march on January 19.
